Damp Gym Towels Are Spreading Skin Infections in South Florida

Walk into any gym in Miami, Parkland, or Tamarac in October and you'll see the same thing: a stack of towels that got rung out, folded, and reused within the hour. South Florida humidity doesn't let anything dry fast, and gym towels are no exception. That damp, warm fabric is basically a five-star hotel for bacteria and fungus — and we're seeing the results of it on patients' skin more and more.
We're not trying to scare anyone off their workout. We just want you to understand what's actually happening when a towel gets used, wiped on equipment, draped over a shoulder, and reused before it ever fully dries.
**Why a damp towel is such a problem**
Bacteria like staph and fungi like the ones that cause ringworm don't need much to thrive — just warmth, moisture, and a surface to sit on. A gym towel checks every box. You sweat into it, it stays damp for hours, and then it gets used again on your face, neck, or an area of skin that's already a little irritated from a workout. That's a direct transfer route for infection.
This is a big reason we're seeing more gym skin infections across our South Florida locations, especially during the months when humidity and gym traffic are both high. It's not that gyms are dirtier than they used to be. It's that the climate here makes it almost impossible for shared fabric and equipment to dry between uses, which gives bacteria and fungus a longer window to spread.
**What skin infections from the gym actually look like**
Patients come in describing it differently depending on what they picked up. Staph infections often start as a red, tender bump that looks like a pimple or spider bite, and it can get warm and swollen fast. Ringworm shows up as a round, scaly, itchy patch — often on the arms, legs, or torso, right where a towel or mat would have touched skin. Folliculitis looks like a cluster of small red bumps around hair follicles, usually on the back, chest, or thighs.
If something like this shows up within a day or two of a gym session, that timing matters. We ask about gym habits in almost every one of these visits because a skin infection from gym equipment or shared towels has a pretty recognizable pattern once you know what to look for.
**It's not just the towels**
Towels are the most overlooked culprit, but they're part of a bigger picture. Sweaty hats left in gym bags, tight workout clothes that stay damp, and direct contact with mats and benches all play a role too. We've written before about how sweat-soaked hats damage the scalp and how humidity makes folliculitis worse here specifically, because South Florida's climate turns small hygiene lapses into real skin problems much faster than it would in a drier state.
**What actually helps**
Bring your own towel and wash it after every single use — not every other day. Wipe down equipment before and after you use it, even if the gym already did. Shower as soon as possible after your workout, and don't let sweaty clothes sit in a bag for hours before washing them. None of this is complicated, but it's the difference between a normal gym routine and one that keeps leaving you with bumps, rashes, or sores you can't explain.
**When to come see us**
If a red bump is getting bigger, more painful, or warm to the touch, don't wait it out. The same goes for a scaly patch that's spreading or anything that isn't responding to over-the-counter treatment after a few days. We've also seen patients deal with staph infections that keep coming back because the first round wasn't fully treated, so getting it looked at early really does matter. We can usually tell what we're dealing with on sight, and getting the right treatment started quickly keeps a small problem from turning into a bigger one — or spreading to someone else at home.
A good workout shouldn't come with a side effect. If your skin's been acting up after gym sessions, let's figure out why.
